Professor Yeshayahu Leibowitz (1903-1994) was a scientist, rationalist, and committed Orthodox Jew. He is remembered as a political activist, but his religious thought is a godsend for anyone struggling with the challenges facing Judaism in today’s world. Why be observant when God allowed the Holocaust, historians think the Exodus from Egypt never happened, Jewish tradition is out of step with the modern world, and the State of Israel is no better than any other country? Decades ago, Professor Leibowitz boldly faced these challenges and opened a Jewish path through them. Some of us may follow him on that path; all of us can be inspired by the intelligence and fearlessness of his approach to serving God in a godless world.
