When we think about gender in Jewish text, most of us think of stories that reflect the gender roles and power structures portrayed in the Torah and reinforced in rabbinic law. However, there are endless textual moments that complicate and subvert this picture - characters who step "out of role" to further God's agenda, laws that cannot fit people as they are. We will look at several of these moments, and see why they complicate the mainstream stories of gender and power portrayed by so many of our texts.
